Rest In Peace Gregory Isaacs

Reggae has lost a major recording icon on the 25th October 2010 as Gregory Isaacs has passed away from lung cancer, he was 59.  Isaacs had a prolific career spanning four decades and his "Cool Ruler" vocal style influenced scores of Jamaican and international singers. Along with Dennis Brown and Bob Marley, Isaacs was truly a reggae giant. Rest In Peace with Jah.

As always with new Pretty Lights music, you just know it’s gonna be killer! Glowing In The Darkest Night is the third and final EP in the series they have being posting for free throughout the year. Pitch Black - Live

Hard to box into a single audio 'genre', Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. Their live EP has a recording from a Tokyo show as well as three songs recorded at the Red Bull Studio in Auckland. Download it here.

Silent Local - Quiet EP

It is not that I am behind the times, it is that I was not blogging when this was first put out. This really impressed me when it first came out as it was played on local radio show Base FM; however now that I have finally re-stumbled across it, I can share it with you. Produced and mastered by Joerg Kopp for Baby Steps Recordings. Download the Silent Local "Quiet EP" here. I sincerely hope there is more to come of this.

Destroy Babylon - Backyard Babylon

Recorded live on July 4th 2008 in the backyard of Grandma's Studio, Queens NYC .
In the summer of '08 Destroy Babylon embarked on their first tiny tour down the East Coast. Hitting as many cities as possible, including Boston, Hartford, Philly, NYC, DC, Raleigh NC, and Fairfax VA. The final date was on July 4th, where they threw a BBQ/backyard party at Those Guyz crib (ThoseGuyz= HB, Brian, & Icerocks, our NYC producers) in Astoria Queens. It was a dark, overcast day, and they had no time to prepare for this recording. Destroy Babylon played on grass, in the rain, and to a small crowd of people playing Beirut & grilling. They never had any intention of recording a serious live album, and this release is true to their live show- one take, no overdubs, fuck-ups and all. Download "Backyard Babylon" here.

Olmecha Supreme - Live on Kiwi FM

Little Dragon - Twice

Hailing from Gothenburg, Little Dragon make genre-defying songs centred around singer Yukimi Nagano's arresting vocal.

Little Dragon

Little Dragon is one of the few groups out there that tick all the boxes. They are original – their music isn’t limited to one current trend. They have a sound that sits comfortably within the pop and alternative realms and they are bringing it to the people the old school way – that is making honest music tgat speaks for itself and touring relentlessly. This is what has earned them a steadily growing and extremely loyal fan base. This isn’t a group being force fed to us via the mass marketing machine, their success seems to me a very organic thing – so I enjoyed this two-part doco a lot because it shed much more light on their process and philosophy about making music. Worth watching!

Miles Bonny - INcense and Wine

I have so much time and appreciation for Miles Bonny. Clearly a man "doing it for the love" as you can tell by his "pay what you feel" on bandcamp. You can download INcense and Wine for free if you so wish, but I do think you should throw a few dollars his way so the man can keep recording and sharing the beautiful music he creates. Also, whilst checking out INcense and Wine, also click on the other works he has done which will appear on the right hand side. Download INcense and Wine here.

Oliver Daysoul - Mr Saint Louis EP

For those of you who don't know, Olivier Saint Louis aka "Olivier Daysoul" has been working with Oddisee on a project that has been in the planning for quite some time between these two best friends. Their careers have taken them on many different paths, put this is what they have always wanted to write, produce and record.

The first 1000 downloads of this EP will be free, after that it will change to a pay what you want deal. I'm so excited about this project, it is really hard to create an authentic but modern soul sound and I love every song on the Mr Saint Louis EP, it's beautifully written and produced, and Olivier's voice and songwriting is finally given a real chance to shine. Not only does the package include the four full tracks but a remix from Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, all of the instrumentals, and the acappellas with their BPMs.

Download this beautiful goodness here

Sven Swift - I'm Odd Fashioned

Sven Swift (Error Broadcast label manager) kindly offered nutriot.com his latest mixtape for hosting.

I’m Odd Fashioned pt. 1 (download)
01. Eric Dolphy – Hat & Beard
02. Joe Henderson – Black
03. AntĆ“nio Carlos Jobim – God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun
04. Bobby Hutcherson – Idle While
05. John Coltrane – Lonnie’s Lament
06. Sam Rivers – Involution
07. Pharoah Sanders – Colors

Sven’s motives for digging out some jazz records rather than the ill beats from all corners of the world (like Russia.):  The 1960s were awesome times for Jazz music, or more precisely, Anti-Jazz music. Pioniered by the likes of Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane, young US American Jazz cats shifted the genre to a whole new level exploring the modal qualities of Jazzmusic. At the edges of Free and Avantgarde Jazz (the New Thing!), music full of beauty and adventure was created.

Cody Chesnutt - Come Back Like Spring

Cody Chesnutt has released a beautiful track, come back like spring which is on bandcamp  for download. get it here.

honeysuckle on the wind
hear the lawnmowers again
greet the day with my chin up

drinking water on the grass
from a handmade calabash
feel the ant bite - ouch

lo the order and the times
they agree and align and
all the colours combine to remind us to

taking photos on the pond
get the big smile with a little charm
mosquito bit my arm

feeling thankful for the breeze
but the pollen, i've got to sneeze
but we get the dogwood trees

Friday, 15 October 2010

I have a soft spot for Future Vintage. It is through their podcasts that my music collection (& taste) has grown in positive directions.

To quote: Sometimes it’s hard to explain in words what Future Vintage is about, but this week we thought it’s actually quite simple. When riding on my bike to work on a monday morning (30 minutes forth, 30 minutes back) Future Vintage should be what I like to hear. Nothing more, nothing less. And then I hope a lot of other people will like it too.

I can relate to that feeling.
