Ninja Tune & Big Dada have put out the latest 'Solid Steel Radio Show from the 28th January 2011 up for download.
Part 1 & 2 - Hexstatic
Hexstatic in the mix this week with an eclectic mix of old and new tunes inspired by cycling around ye olde London. A classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. Big fav from last year,.. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' manages to be both banging and heartfelt at the same time and leads perfectly into spanking fresh new matierial from Robin Hexstatic's new 36 Kings project. Next up The surprisingly classic Flying Into Tokyo from Magnetic Man that mixes suprememly well with Andreya Triana. A nice syncopated tempo change from Al Usher and a big big old fav from techno legend Dave Angel and then into some nice dancefloor action from Zero 7, until we end on a more chilled vibe with lovely electronica from Koreless and Commix. Enjoy.
The Leisure Allstars step into the arena for the second hour and it's more of their trademarks shenanigans with beats and bass from Tipper and hip hop from Rhettmatic & Lyrics Born. They up the pace with music from South Rakkas Crew and Vent and on through Toddla T, Max Sedgley and Toby Loi. They finish on a drum and bass high with Marcus Visionary and Artificial Intelligence.
D'Angelo seems to be a hot flavour at the moment! Freddie Joachim has put together a beautiful remix of 'Left & Right' which you can download here. Enjoy!
Artistically speaking, LA-based producer and Brainfeeder acolyte Tokimonsta couldn't have less in common with sultry crooner Andreya Triana—the former makes obtusely experimental hip-hop-leaning tunes and the latter seems to have a serious penchant for the second coming of jazz music. Nonetheless, the two work well together on this remix of Triana's "Far Closer" tune, which drops with on a single featuring other versions of the song on February 15 via Ninja Tune (artwork above). While Tokimonsta works out a bulbous, alien-G-funk bassline, a slick boom-boom-crunch rhythm, and some spacey atmospheres, the singer delivers syrupy line after sweet, syrupy line of classic jazz inflections. The complete odd couple quite easily became a winning pair. Download Andreya Triana - Far Closer (Tokimonsta Remix) here.
D'Angelo is incredible and we have been waiting over ten years for him to release a follow up to Voodoo. This link is to a '.rar' (similar to a Zipped File) of 'James River' the new album (i do not know the official release date) by D'Angelo. You will most likely need a 'rar expander' program. I am a Mac user and found http://rarexpander.sourceforge.net/ extremely easy to use. I am now going to sync my iPod to my iTunes so that I can go for a walk and listen to this no doubt worth the wait (although waiting was frustrating) 'James River' by D'Angelo. Download it here.
Isaac Aesili is one of those constantly busy, extremely talented musicians who is involved in so many projects with so many different artisits. Also, the fact that he is from Aotearoa makes him just that much cooler! Like most musicians from Aotearoa his beats have that typical NZ Sound and although the album that this song is on was released in 2009, this new video is fantastic! This is one of those songs that I put on when I am getting ready to go out because it gets me dancing and in a good mood! Isaac, you are an excellent ambassador for Aotearoa's Music.
The original of this track is amazing so when I first saw that it had been remixed I was cautious, although I had no reason to be - Freddie Joachim has paid tasteful homage in this beautiful remix of Little Dragon's 'Twice'. Download it here from Soundcloud.
Lykke Li has one of those haunting voices that lingers in the air with a heavy weight that grabs at you. This David Sitek Remix of her track 'I Follow Rivers' is beautiful. Download it here from Soundcloud.
I have not watched this yet, but I have seen lots of discussion on twitter about it which tells me it must be amazing. This rare documentary was broadcasted for the first time in 1981 by the BBC.
It's is about the 1980/1981 USA tour by Stevie Wonder looking at his musical insight and his preparation for a concert, and his appearance at a Washington Rally to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King.
Hiphop from Aotearoa - unfortunately this particular track is not up for download (but check out their other tracks which are). These guys have nice beats production and this track is worth the listen. I also have respect for their wee list:
Priorities for Sunday:
1)Drink
2)Smoke
3)Talk shit
Jaylib - Louder (Blast Your Radio Theme) - a previously unreleased track from Madlib & J Dilla's unrealized second album. This track has now been released on Madlib Medicine Show #11: Low Budget High Fi Music. Listen to it here on Soundcloud.
This is a funky wee track that i truly recomend downloading, i wish i had had this earlier when i was up at kFM but at least i can play it next week! Download 'Wee Rant' by Soom T & Disrupt here. (It is about smoking weed...)
I am not sure how much longer this download will be up for (usually they are only up for a week) but this is a MUST HAVE for anybody and everybody. Christmas Chur is two remixes which have not previously been put out...
Ahu's song 'To Love' is on the remix circle at the moment and with good reason, it is a fantastic song. This tasty wee remix is by Tightface, you can get it here.
Canadian soul singer Glenn Lewis is back on the scene with new music to groove to. On his first single in two years, "Good One," he praises the woman in his life, even calling her the "cure to cancer." Grand statements aside, the mid-tempo jam, one of his favorites, is an excellent reintroduction to Glenn's voice. Love songs are amazing, this track is testament to that. Download 'Good One' by Glenn Lewis here.
I hate that I have only just discovered this now! It would have been amazing to listen to over the silly season. However, at least I have it now and can tuck it away for the coming Christmas. Mayer Hawthorne has an amazing voice and this is one Christmas song which will not frustrate the hell out of you to listen to.
So Phat is no longer. Not a surprise really, i am sure that the ones i did not go (pre Phat10) to where better than the one i did go to (Phat10) but i have to say, they lost touch with their roots. Booking Datsik for Phat11? Seriously? what the fuck where they thinking? Who knows....
I hope something awesome will stand up and the gap that this has no doubt left for all bass fans of Aotearoa who made the mission to play in the mud... hopefully future organizers will have the smarts to turn the music down (or off) between the hours of dawn and 12pm to give people SOME level of respite and throw a bit more reggae/downtempo in there rather than small time DJs who constantly thrash the 'song of the moment' (meaning every set will contain the same song so by the time your 3 days are up you hate it)...
Anyway, i digress. it is always sad to see the end of an era regardless of my personal feelings towards it. Organikismness was a Phat staple (who always plays a great set no matter where he is playing) and wrote 'Sleep Walkers' in honor of Phat - 'this tune goes out to every nutter i ever saw between the hours of 5 - 10 am, you bunch of te - rards were what made it so special'.
This is a giggle.... I have never heard of anyone doing a comedy mixtape before, but here you go - if you are having a shit day listen to this. it will have you giggling, or at the very least, cracking a smile. Download 'What You Laughing At?' here.
Ukrainian activists cover their mouths with US flags during a rally in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in front of the Swedish embassy to Ukraine in Kiev on December 22 2010
WikiLeaks is now at the centre of a global battle between media and those in power but what's new about what Julian Assange is doing? WikiLeaks is much more than just another journalistic scandal, it is a challenge to the way that power and news media operate in the Internet Age.
In some ways WikiLeaks is a traditional investigative news operation. It gets its information from a source and the journalists decide what they will publish. It needs a platform, an audience and revenue just like any other newsroom. It can also be sued, censored or attacked. But because it is trying to operate online outside of normal national jurisdictions it is harder to hold to account. It can use mirror sites and multiple servers to avoid physical restraint.
It also disseminates data on such a vast scale and directly to the public so it is posting a different threat to those in authority used to being able to influence if not control the media. It is independent and not run for profit and the people who work for it are ideologically motivated. This all makes it much harder to clamp down.
Oxford University Internet analyst John Naughton says that what WikiLeaks is really exposing is the extent to which the western democratic system has been hollowed out. It is not that what it publishes will endanger lives or make government impossible. It is that it forces power out into the open. That is why those in power are attacking it. WikiLeaks worries them because it protects its sources and gives the evidence directly and in great detail and scale to the citizen.
It is also a challenge to mainstream media. As Columbia University digital journalism expert Emily Bell argues, it forces journalists and news organisations to demonstrate to what extent they are now part of an establishment it is their duty to report. In other words, WikiLeaks exposes the degree to which normal journalism has lost its watchdog role.
Mainstream journalism stands accused of failing to be critical enough of those in authority. Over the economic crash of 2007 and over intelligence and the Iraq war, it failed to challenge the conventional wisdom. It was not a conspiracy or a failure of resource. It was because journalism can be too responsible, balanced and passive. Sometimes journalism needs to be disruptive, critical and even partial.
No-one denies that what WikiLeaks has revealed about the Iraq war or the diplomatic cables is true. It is important because it has revealed specific abuses such as the collateral damage video of UK military executing civilians. But the latest release of diplomatic communications are even more significant because they show how power works, not just what it does. It gives an insight into the values, priorities and knowledge of authority that helps us to make much better-informed judgements of what those in power actually do. Surely, that is precisely what journalism is for?
It is encouraging to see how WikiLeaks is now working with mainstream news media organisations on their latest stories. It is good that the expertise within those newsrooms can be used to help filter, explain and contextualise the raw data. It can then be presented in a way that allows for proper responses by the authorities and the public. That kind of interaction is exactly what should happen over these issues, not the knee-jerk attempt to kill the messenger.
Instead of blocking access to websites and hiding behind firewalls it would be sensible for those in power to consider a more mature and transparent relationship with their citizens.
Of course, some of these revelations may compromise safety and security. There should always be limits on free expression. Responsibility comes with rights for the journalist. However, even when it is damaging, disclosure should always be welcomed. It's why it's the First Amendment.
The danger is that we are now heading towards a future where governments from Beijing to Washington will welcome more controls on the Internet. This would then limit the power of the most liberating technology the world has seen since the invention of printing itself. It would be nave to expect those in power to embrace radical accountability. So we need to fight for transparency and embrace the opportunity that initiatives like WikiLeaks represent.
I recognise that WikiLeaks is not itself entirely transparent but I think that it is becoming more so and other better versions will follow. The real problem in the world is secrecy not leakers.
